The Chiloé Archipelago was settled by the Chono and Huilliche peoples more than 6,000 years ago, long before Spanish missionaries arrived in 1567 and began constructing the wooden Jesuit chapels that now anchor UNESCO's World Heritage designation across sixteen island sites.
